Friday Night Free Skate - March 2010
The Factory Skatepark runs a free skate session weekly on Friday nights from 6pm to 8pm targeted at children and young people from the DD4 8 postcode area. The aims of this provision are to help build relationships with the children and young people in the area who use the service provided at the Skatepark. The Free Skate is facilitated by the Factory youth team. Two youth workers normally meet with the young people outside of the building at 5pm which is the time at which the young people start to queue up as spaces are limited and it is a popular service. There is then an hour before they go and skate which is used to engage with the young people, promote provisions and to give them an opportunity to build relationships with each other and the youth team. It is during this time that any suggestions or ideas for new youth work activities can be gathered from the young people so that future provisions can continue to reflect their wishes and involve them in planning. Numbers of attendees are a good indicator of how successful this provision is. The list is full with an average of 25 young people using the service almost every week. The confidence of young people in speaking to members of staff and voicing opinions to them appears to have improved in many cases. It is a useful and popular provision that provides the youth team with an invaluable opportunity to spark interest and promote youth work provision to young people who are not currently engaging in any of our diversionary activities.
