Healthly Lifestyle Course - March 2010
The healthy living course was a 6 week course that consisted of young people getting together to learn about healthy living. This also included taking part in very active popular sports. Part of this course involved letter writing to sports stars of the young peopleís choice. They asked for advice and information about the sports person lifestyle and how they managed to be in the position they were now in. Diet sheets were made up for the young people to get an insight in to their eating patterns and what they had to eat so they could compare their results with the rest of the group.
Some of the youths just enrolled because they assumed skating would be involved and didnít take much away from this but for the others that came weekly and got involved they were much more active at the end and got involved in all the team sports even taking charge in some weeks. The young peopleís self esteem had grown a lot and the younger ones were happy to mix with the older ones regardless of the situation whereas at the start they were quiet even with the staff. . Also in the last week we had a small basketball tournament which the kids really enjoyed. It was split up into young and other youths. I think more of this competition style games would work well in future groups. Although it was clear to see the massive difference that having spent six weeks together really changed them and made them a lot more confidence and boosted the young ones self esteem.
